E. Altensteinii

Encephalartos altensteinii, commonly referred to as the Eastern Cape giant cycad is frequently found in gardens all over the world as it is a fast growing cycad with little fuss about it's growing conditions. 

Often one of collectors first plants to be obtain, these plants are easy growing and tolerate a variety of climates and lighting conditions. 

 

Plant stems can reach lengths upwards to 7 meters, although these are rare sights and take hundreds of years to get to this size.

 

Leaves can become up  to 2 meters in length on well established plants, with the pinnae arranged in a strong V. Leaflets are up to 20cm long and 2-4 cm wide
