Cycad Soil Mixtures

Frequently overlooked, often misunderstood, the substrate your plants grow in is the most important component. Various mixtures are used in cultivation to grow cycads, ranging from basic and inexpensive to advanced and costly.

Locally, basic mixtures are more common, tried and proven. Some examples often used are:

  • 1 part friable loam  - 1 part organic compost

  • 1 part friable loam - 1 part silica sand - 2 part organic compost

The benefits of the mixtures are that they are inexpensive, the components are freely available, they provide adequate drainage whilst having good moisture and nutrient retention.
